释奠礼诞生于周朝,定制于唐朝,完善于宋朝,明、清时期更趋完美。虽然释奠礼在唐至元也曾用于祭祀武成王,北周偶用于祭祀仓颉,清代用于祭祀关公和文昌帝君,但只有文庙释奠为人们所熟知,而且至今还在使用,释奠几乎成了文庙祭祀的代名词。在中国,至今仍然保留着南朝以来的乐歌和服饰制度,唐朝以来的仪注,宋、元、明、清和民国的乐谱,明、清和民国的舞谱,以及众多关于释奠的诗赋等文学作品,积累了丰厚的文化遗产。
