自本世纪50年代中期始.中国现代工艺美术建设进入了一个新的历史时期。象年轻的共和国在东方崛起那样,一种坚韧的理性精神也在工艺美术领域崛起,这种理性精神是那些善于独立思考、潜心工艺美术事业的人们以他们的思想凝聚而成的。历经四十多年的风风雨雨,这种理性精神始终未减它进取的锐意,它执着地探索着一个与共和国工艺美术事业命运相关的基本课题——建设现代形态的中国工艺美术事业、探寻工艺美术于新文化格局的方位,思索新时代造物运动价值取向的理性精神,构成当代中国工艺美术界的总领性的思想意向新中国工艺美术现代形态建设的成果,特别是思想认识成果,要归功于理性精神的建设。然而,中国现代工艺美术理性精神的发展和传播,却主要有赖于《装饰》这块得天独厚的思想阵地。《装饰》刊行的最初动机及其贯彻始终的旨趣,为理性精神的活跃创造了良好的氛围。活跃的理性精神、则构成了《装饰》的魅力,构成了《装饰》之于中国工艺美术现代形态建设的最有价值的贡献综观当代中国工艺美术思想建设的实践,我们不难理解《装饰》影响力和学术性的内在根据,也不难理解陈之佛、沈从文、张光宇、陈叔亮、庞薰琴、雷圭元、王朝闻、张仃、吴劳、王家树、田自秉等一批博学卓识的著名专家学者致力于《装饰》耕耘的深刻动机。因为,《装饰》的主流倾向和中心旨趣,集中体现了具有积极建设性的理性精神。
