当前中小型快速舰艇的推进主机只有航空派生式燃气轮机和结构紧凑的轻型柴油机两种。目前市场所能提供的航空派生式船用燃气轮机的最大功率为35,000马力(26,000千瓦),而轻型柴油机的单机最大功率为8,000马力(6,000千瓦)。从当前世界上装舰主机的情况来看,在小型快艇中柴油机占压倒优势;在较大一些的舰艇中,例如护卫舰,大多数采用联合动力装置,即柴油机或小功率燃气轮机作为巡航机,大功率燃气轮机作为加速机。本文主要以MTU 956系列柴油机为例论述舰用柴油机的要求。
