Australia’s Gem Engine Company is one of the first factories in the engine building industry to use CNC vertical machining centers. The plant recently refurbished several of the latter’s machining centers, costing only a fraction of the cost of newly purchased machine tools. Twelve years ago, Gem bought six Matsuura Machicery CNC vertical machining centers in Japan for the first time to meet production growth needs to improve production. These machines are expected to replace the 12 ~ 15 dedicated milling machine and can operate in one milling, reaming, boring and coordinate measurement work. Gem repairs 2,000 engines a month, with two workshops for the engine block and cylinder head, respectively.
