唐朝后期,南北司(北衙宦官与南司翰林)的权力斗争十分尖锐,可说是贯穿始终的主要矛盾之一。在这样的政治背景下,作为朝官老大的宰相如果依附宦官当然会遭士人白眼不得人心,认为是叛徒;但反过来,如果南司士子没有掌握实权的权宦的推荐,又根本不可能当上位极人臣的宰相。南北司本身都是唐朝政府的重要组成部分,却分裂成两大政治势力和流派,这本身就是一种弊政。而贵为国家元首的皇帝若不能协调此种矛盾,就也只能隔岸观火让他们斗个死去活来
