Due to the historical origins of the introduction of Chinese characters into Japan, a large number of Chinese words spread from China to Japan are called “Chinese.” Most of these “Chinese” belong to the same type of synonymous or similar meaning, but there is no lack of homonym or not synonymous. The word “profound” is commonly used in both China and Japan. When learning and translating Japanese, Chinese are always habitually applying the literal meaning of Chinese characters. In fact, the word “profound” has great differences in the pragmatic functions of the Chinese and Japanese languages. This article analyzes and compares the examples of Japanese-Chinese translation, analyzes the Japanese-Chinese functionalities, and points out the mistakes in the interpretation of the domestic dictionary entries to help Japanese learners correctly understand and grasp the meaning of Japanese and avoid mistranslation.
