近代早期英国贵族、仆人、普通劳动者和小偷提供的大量二手服装,通过流动小商贩、批发商、旧服装店主和当铺老板的收购和再销售,使时装不再是贵族阶层独享的奢侈品,而是普通大众的生活必需品。普通大众一方面积极模仿贵族的时尚着装,另一方面坚决抵制象征等级差异的传统服装,消费水平日益提高。二手服装使普通大众与社会上层人士着装的差距不断缩小,对传统等级秩序造成了很大冲击。
