According to recently released data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), manufacturing in the United States saw a 17% decrease in energy use between 2002 and 2010. In the same period, the GDP of manufacturing industry decreased by only 3%. These data show that the US manufacturing unit significantly reduced energy consumption per unit of output. In 2010, the U.S. manufacturing industry accounted for 11% of the GDP. Manufacturing includes high energy-consuming industries such as petroleum refining, chemicals, aluminum, steel, paper, wood and food processing, as well as less energy-intensive industries such as textiles, leather, garments, furniture, machining and electrical equipment.
