As early as 1900, India started steel production and built the Tata Steel Plant in Jamshe-dpur, India’s first steel conglomerate. Prior to independence in 1947, another private conglomerate, India Steel Corporation, was built in Burnpur. Shortly after independence in 1947, India’s steel industry developed rapidly. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, three state-owned steel mills were built in Rourkela, Bhilai and Durgapur. Since then, the completion of the Bokaro steel plant in the early 1970s and the current Vizg steelworks have been completed. These factories are state-owned. 1947 India
