Mass culture is popular culture produced by mass production industrial techniques and is marketed for a profit to a mass public of consumers. According to English studies,it should have another function,that is ideological manipulation. By analyzing the Hollywood film The English Patient and its original novel,the research attempts to reveal that under the manipulation of ideology in America and Britain in the1990 s,the filmmakers,using certain strategies,changed the film into a traditional Hollywood romantic love story. Film as one of the mass culture productions,therefore,gains both economic and ideological goals.
