John Wood, author of this article, is a renowned international design theorist, a professor of design at the Goldsmiths College, University of London, and the founder of the college’s master’s program, Design Futures. This article points out that design was originally developed to rapidly convert science and technology into productivity. Under such a system of economic efficiency as the center, designing too much emphasis on instrumentalism and ignoring the long-term benefits of society as a whole ultimately aggravates the damage to the ecological balance. Therefore, designers must start thinking about the long-term future. In the era of handicraft industry, the design of “future” is defined as the birth of the product, but with the rapid development of science and technology and the rapid increase of productivity, the previously defined “future” is getting closer to the present and can not benefit all people . Therefore, we must rethink the concept of “time” and learn to look squarely at the shortened “future of design.” In the future, designers must pay attention to the short-term benefits of the product, which are not enough to meet the needs of the society or even be harmful to the society.
