Mr. Wu Renshu’s book on luxury in taste: the consumer society and the scholar in the late Ming (Beijing: Zhonghua Book Company 2008 edition, hereinafter referred to as “taste luxury”) is refreshing. At first glance, the question of “consumption” seems subordinate to the field of economic history, and the study of consumption differs from that of past historiography in terms of production. However, in the title of “taste luxury”, it seems that it is also a social and cultural history The book attempts to lead us to use the full range of sensory forces to “” taste the luxury of the late Ming dynasty and to observe this phenomenon in a multidimensional way of thinking. After reading it, he also felt interesting and entertaining. This article aims to give a brief introduction of the main content of the book, discuss its characteristics, contributions and inspiration for itself, and put forward some doubts.
