The U.S. Department of Defense signed a $ 176 million contract with BAE Systems to produce 87 M777 A2 155mm towed artillery pieces. The M777 gun was made of Ti alloy instead of steel, reducing the gun’s mass from 7257.5 kg to 4082.3 kg, thus improving shipping performance and installation time. Although Ti alloys improve M777’s function, Ti alloy components are still several times more expensive than steel, and Ti alloys are more complex than steel. To improve the affordability of light artillery, the NMC uses new manufacturing processes to reduce part count, manufacturing costs, and material waste. The main objective of this project is to replace the preparation of multi-part parts with a single piece of Ti alloy precision castings.
