In the 1950s, the mainland began to promote simplified Chinese characters. The books published gradually came in the form of simplified characters, while the books published in Taiwan continued to use traditional Chinese characters. Because of cross-strait isolation, over the years the two versions can not interoperate in the distribution. Since 1985, the state has promulgated a series of policies and regulations that provide equal protection of copyright to Taiwan compatriots and mainland authors. In recent years, copyright trade has become the main form of publishing exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.
