Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is an important member of adhesion molecules. It participates in mediating the adhesion, migration and differentiation of endothelial cells by monocytes. In the early stages of atherosclerosis, mainly the infiltration of single-branched cells, macrophages, T cells and neutrophils, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 plays an important role. Lipoprotein and other factors can regulate the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 through different transcription factors and pathways, of which the role of nuclear factor-kB is more studied. Blocking monocyte migration to and interaction with endothelial cells may be an effective way to prevent or reverse atherosclerosis.
