Located in the heart of Australia, Alice Springs is a development with the geographical proximity to key natural attractions such as Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Wa-tarrka, Good tourist destination. The staying time of tourists to Alice Springs recently dropped significantly. The use of local heritage resources has been identified by the destination marketing organization Tourism Northern Territory as a way to encourage travelers to stay longer. In preparing the Heritage Tourism Action Plan, Tourism Northern Territory commissioned Charles Sturt University to assess the existing economic value of heritage tourism in this area and the potential for further development of heritage tourism. The present study uses economic modeling methods previously used to evaluate the tourism value of national parks and reveals that more than 10% of tourism expenditures at Alice Springs can be attributed to heritage tourism. This study shows that relatively simple factors such as product display activities and reliance on the unpaid portion of heritage tourism resources are relatively low. Innovations in product development, packaging and sales are necessary for Alles Springs to increase the value of heritage tours.
