A joint study by universities and industrial companies has resulted in significant improvements in the copper sulphide beneficiation process at the Caraibá plant in Brazil. The plant is Brazil’s largest copper processing plant, handling 5 tons of ore per year. The use of corn starch dextrin derivatives instead of sodium silicate as an inhibitor, the copper concentrate can be reduced from 7.5% MgO 3.5%, SiO 2 from 20% to 10.5%. Both MgO and SiO 2 contents are lower than those of flash smelting copper for MgO (4.25%) and SiO 2 (12.75%). Brazil’s copper concentrate can be directly smelting flash, without the need to mix with imported concentrate. As a result of these improvements, copper recovery increased by $ 200,000 / month.
