In ancient times, the letter″LI″(rite) was structured like a ritual utensil.In inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells,″li″(rite) was an activity carried out solely on offering sacrifices to ancestors. In inscriptions on ancient bronze objects, it was interchangeable with the letter ″Fung″.In the period of the Eastern Zhou dynasty, rite began to have broader cultural connotation.And by records of ancient writings and documents, the relation between rite and ritual utensil is obvious.In a word, the material form of rite is the ritual utensil.From studies of the letter″Li″,it is credible that in the Zhou dynasty″li″ actually reflected the political power distribution of the nobles.
