为缅怀在抗日战争中牺牲的中外航空人员的业绩,弘扬爱国主义与国际主义精神,由南京,北京以及粤、黔、陕、川、桂、云等省市航空联谊会联合倡议,南京航空航天大学教授、航空界著名学者、南京航空联谊会顾问、全国人大代表张阿舟在1989年全国人大、政协七届一次大会上提出,经中央批准决定在南京紫金山北麓航空烈士公墓内、建立航空烈士纪念碑,此碑已于1995年9月3日建成揭幕.航空烈士公墓始建于1932年8月,占地50亩.新建的抗日航空烈士纪念碑由主碑和英烈英名碑群组成,位于公墓最上方.主碑高15米,呈“V”字形,象征胜利,后面环列花岗石英名碑群30座,60面,分别环列于主碑
