In order to clarify the cause of the tube failure in vertical U-shaped tubes of waste heat boilers,after the in- vestigation of flow pattern transitions for air-water two-phase flow,the thermal experiments were conducted in an electrically heated high pressure water loop under the conditions of p=10.6 MPa,G=800—2000 kg/m~2 and q=80—330 kW/m~2.The wall temperature profile along the bend of U-shaped tube was obtained.Based on the flow pattern transitions of two-phase flow,the mechanisms of boiling heat transfer deterioration in the bends of vertical U-shaped tubes were discussed.The two-phase flow pattern diagram was modified in accordance with the present thermal results.The conditions for safe operation in U-shaped tubes were determined.
