Most of the boiled steel ingots produced in the Soviet Union are top-coated by chemical capping. The most popular process is to add aluminum or other deoxidizer to the molten steel immediately after pouring of the ingot mold. The structure of the ingot, the location and shape of the crater, the segregation zone, and the low magnification of the finished product depend largely on the shape and structure of the head of the ingot - a “dense metal” bridge.
