Our mind may forget things as we get older, but there are some things that our heart will never forget.
Three years ago, Melvyn was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s(癡呆症). Since then he doesn’t always remember little things that he used to be able to easily recall, like whether he proposed (求婚) to his wife, Doris, or if she proposed to him.
The day before Mother’s Day, Melvyn went missing, which isn’t uncommon in Alzheimer’s patients. Some people with Alzheimer’s may set out to go on a walk and then forget how to get back home and end up walking aimlessly.
Doris called the police when she realized her husband was gone. He usually needs help to do any walking at all so she was worried he could hurt himself.
Two policemen found Melvyn three kilometres from his house. When they asked him where he was going, he said he was going to buy flowers for Doris for Mother’s Day, just like he had done every year since their first child was born.
Even though Melvyn couldn’t remember his address or even where he started walking, he knew he had to get some flowers for his wife.
Rather than driving him home right away, the policemen gave him a lift to the flower store and even paid for the flowers.
“When I saw him walking up with those flowers in hand, it just about broke my heart because I thought ‘Oh he went there to get me flowers because he loves me’.” Doris said to the policemen when they dropped Melvyn at home.
“It’s special, because even though the mind doesn’t remember everything, the heart remembers.”
