人对自然的认识是随着人对自我认识的深化而展开的。从魏晋到唐代,已经有不少是以圣贤高士为题材的人物画,之后就更多的是以佛教和道教有关的故事人物画为主了。然而,艺术是要求变化的,要求可以扩展画家的胸怀,这些在人物画上都不容得尽量地发挥。山水在艺术上的自觉,较之在人自身上所引起的艺术上的自觉更加体现出了它的本色。至此,山水画成为了之后中国绘画的主流。
People’s understanding of nature is with people’s deepening of self-understanding. From the Wei and Jin dynasties to the Tang dynasty, quite a few portraits have been painted on the subject of sages and servants, and most of them have been mainly based on stories and portraits of Buddhism and Taoism. However, art requires change, and demands that the painter’s mind be expanded, which can not be fully utilized in portrait painting. Landscape in the artistic consciousness, compared with the man himself caused by the artistic consciousness more reflects its true color. So far, landscape painting has become the mainstream of Chinese painting.
