19世纪中叶以后,不少欧关轮船开始出现在东亚海域。其中创建于欧洲19世纪前期的半岛东方轮船公司(Peninsular and Oriental and SteamNavigation Company,俗称P.&O.轮船公司或大英火轮公司),进入亚洲发展其航运事业。P.&O.轮船公司还进入了开国不久后的日本,于1864年之后开始运营连接日本与上海、香港的航线。该轮船公司的航运活动为东亚地区人员流动作出了巨大贡献。本论文主要阐述19世纪后期进入东亚海域的P.&O.轮船公司的航运活动以及因此而产生的地区合作。
After the middle of the 19th century, many European ships began to appear in the waters of East Asia. Among them was the Peninsular and Oriental and Steam Navigation Company (commonly known as P. & O. Ferries), which was founded in Europe in the early 19th century, entering into Asia to develop its shipping business. P. & O. The shipping company also entered Japan, shortly after the founding of the PRC, and began operating routes connecting Japan with Shanghai and Hong Kong after 1864. The shipping company’s shipping activities have made a significant contribution to the mobility of people in East Asia. This paper focuses on the shipping activities of P. & O. Shipping companies entering the East Asian Sea in the late 19th century and the resulting regional cooperation.
