1962年,美国在“疏远”世博会二十三年之后,再次摇起世博会的大旗。美国人对世博会的热情被再次点燃。1957年10月4日,苏联成功地将世界上第一颗人造卫星送入太空;次年,又在布鲁塞尔世博会上大放异彩,成功将美国PK下去,严重挫伤美国的国际威望。为挽回丢掉的面子,美国佬凑在一起琢磨出了一个反击苏联的上上策:举办世博会。
In 1962, the United States once again swayed the banner of the World Expo twenty-three years after the “alienation” of the World Expo. The enthusiasm of the Americans for the Expo was rekindled. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union succeeded in sending the world’s first satellite to space. The following year, it again shone at the Brussels Expo and succeeded in keeping the PK of the United States down, seriously damaging the U.S. international prestige. In order to restore the lost face, the Americans combined to figure out a counter-Soviet policy: host the World Expo.
