我市地处长江三角洲,总人口103万,是江南著名的古城。1991年6月下旬入梅以后,连降暴雨,降雨量0.82米,占年平均降雨量78.44％,长江上游洪水压境,长江潮位5.67米,超过警戒水位0.46米,太湖流域望虞河水位4.97米,超过历史最高记录0.07米.城区小东门监测点水位4.21米,超过警戒水位0.71米。洪涝淹没水稻37.6万亩,棉花17万亩,瓜果蔬菜苗木2.73万亩;城区街道进水受淹15公里,城乡受淹民房
