Based on the self-built academic business English corpus, this dissertation analyzes the distribution and use of the modal meanings of can and would from three aspects of cognitive modality, obligatory modality and dynamic modality divided by Palmer’s modal verbs The situation has been studied in detail. The results showed that in academic business English, the motivation modality was the most widely used, accounting for 63.22% of the total, and would most commonly used the cognitive modality, reaching 73.45%. Based on this, we think that modal verb can use dynamic modality more in scholarly business English style, expressing author’s subjective initiative, while would use most of cognitive modality, which is reflected in academic business English style , The author prefers to express personal opinion by using would rather avoid the absolute conclusion.
