Gao: The article on humanistic spirit discussed in the third issue of “Reading” raised the common concerns of academic friends. We scholars who deal with the history of philosophy, literary history and ideological and cultural history should really reflect on why the humanistic spirit has failed. What needs to be noticed is the phrase “lost”, which describes the situation in which the humanistic spirit stays at a low level. In my understanding of the spirit of the twentieth century in China, the humanistic spirit of the Chinese people has both the lost side and the generated side (including the excavation and elaboration of the ancient humanistic spirit and the absorption and emulation of the Western humanistic spirit); however, these generated Things, such as the stars on a cloudy night, are often heavily covered so much that they become a rather serious problem. The loss, generation, shelter each other, only constitute a complete historical process.
