At present, the gold mine owned by Anglo American is using microcomputers to improve underground safety conditions. They use a system called “Digi-net” - the “digital information network” to detect and record rock movements. Digi-net was developed by the Rock Mechanics Division, Anglo American Gold Development, Welkom, Oran State, Oregon. Rockburst is a nuisance to South Africa’s deep gold deposits, threatening the personal safety of miners and affecting and destroying ore production on the mining face.
