Objective To investigate the role and function of vestibular membranes in maintaining the balance of ions and liquids in and around the scroll. Methods Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the surface structure of guinea pig vestibular membranes. Results The surface boundary of the extrametalateral mesangial cells of the vestibular membrane was not clear, the edges of the cells were discontinuous, the microvilli on the surface and margins of the vestibular membrane were less, and the nucleus of the mesothelial cells was slightly convex. The anterior vestibular membrane is a single layer of multi-angle irregular epithelial cells, the cells were round or oval shape, flat cells clear boundaries, cell free surface microvilli, while the cell periphery microvilli, the connection between the cells more closely. Conclusions The vestibular membrane is a barrier between the medial and vestibular levels and plays an important role in maintaining the balance between the internal and external lymphatic currents and the fluid
