On June 13, 2003, Eric Foner, chairman of the American Historical Society and Professor DeWitt Clinton of Columbia University, was invited to give a lecture entitled “The Newest Research on Contemporary American History in the World History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Development ”report, covering the social history of the United States, women’s history, political history and other branches of history of the status quo, historiography in society status and role, the role of public intellectuals and other content, and answered questions about scholars. After the report, Professor Fang also discussed with the leaders such issues as academic exchange and cooperation. Born in New York City in 1943, Professor Fontaine graduated from Columbia University in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate from Columbia University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Communications and holds lectures or visiting professors at world famous universities such as Oxford University, Moscow University, Princeton University and the University of Jerusalem. Before assuming the chairmanship of the American Historical Society, he was the chairman of the American historians from 1993 to 1994, the two highest honorary positions in American historiography. In his early years, Professor Fontaine studied the famous American historian Richard Hofstatter to study American history, black history, slavery, civil war and reconstruction and American political culture in the 19th century.
