本文主要运用加布里尔·佐伦和亨利·列斐伏尔的空间理论对小说《爱药》进行分析,主要分为地志空间、社会空间和心理空间三个层面。地志空间指具体的物理空间,白人入侵后,印第安人的地志空间大大缩小,其后隐藏的实际是原住民的主权受到残酷压迫。社会空间强调人与人之间的关系。印第安人的社会空间是矛盾的,他们既无法融入白人社会,也不可能回到过去,最终只能陷入进退两难的状态。地志空间和社会空间进一步又影响了人物的心理空间。心理空间是人物心理意识活动所及的空间。白人文化对印第安传统的侵蚀,让印第安人再次陷入迷茫。一方面,他们不愿放弃本民族的文化;另一方面,又难以抵御新文化的入侵。他们无所适从,既相信天主教又遵从印第安法术。对两种文化的难以取舍也导致了对自己身份的无法界定。在白人文化中成长的印第安人无法判断自己内心到底是印第安人还是白人。
In this paper, Gabriel Zorun and Henri Lefebvre’s space theory are mainly used to analyze the novel “Love Medicine”, which is divided into three parts: geographical space, social space and psychological space. The geographical space refers to the specific physical space. After the white people invaded, the geographical space of the Indians greatly reduced. The hidden reality was then that the aboriginal sovereignty was brutally oppressed. Social space emphasizes the relationship between people. The Indian social space is contradictory. They can neither integrate into the white society nor return to the past, and eventually they can only get into a dilemma. The geographical space and the social space further affect the psychological space of the characters. Psychological space is the space for the activities of mental consciousness. White culture’s erosion of Indian tradition left the Indians confused again. On the one hand, they are reluctant to give up the culture of their own nation; on the other hand, they can hardly resist the invasion of the new culture. They know what to do and believe in both Catholicism and Indian magic. The difficulty of choosing between two cultures has also led to the inability to define one’s identity. Indians, who grew up in white culture, can not tell whether their hearts are Indians or whites.
