The role of cytokines in childhood CNS neoplasias still remains unknown. We investigate their role in childhood CNS neoplasias, determining the levels of the cytokins: EGF, Eotaxin, FGF2, FLT3 ligand, Fractalkine, IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, TNFalpha and VEGF, in CSF and serum samples, both from children with CNS tumor and healthy individualss. Results: Cytokines were over-expressed as follow: a) In CSF∶ EGF and Eotaxin in choroid carcinoma, Fractalkine, IL6, IL8 and TNFA in xanthoastrocytoma, MCP1 in glioblastoma and xanthoastrocytoma; b) In serum: EGF in craniopharyngioma, glioblstoma and rhabdoid tumors, Eotaxin craniopharyngioma and oligodendroglioma, FGF2 in oligodendroglioma and xanthoastrocytoma, FLT3-Ligand in craniopharyngioma, IL6 in oligodendroglioma, IL8 in oligodendroglioma, ependymoma and rhabdoid tumors, MCPI in glioblastoma, craniopharyngioma and rhabdoid tumors, TNFA kαl VEGFA in craniopharyngioma and glioblastoma.Cytokine levels appeared higher in the serum than in CSF, in the majority of tumors, a profile also maintained in the control samples, suggesting that there is a balance between the levels of the two systems. Finally, Eotaxin and FLT3-Ligand are actively involved in the development of CNS tumors, so they should be investigated further for their potential role as prognostic and therapeutic targets.
