  A high carbohydrate intake is important for endurance athletes because endurance exercise performance is limited when intramuscular glycogen is depleted.Carbohydrates can be classified by their glycemic index, which is a measure of how rapidly blood glucose levels rise after consumption.Low glycemicindex carbohydrates result in a slower rise in blood glucose compared to high-glycemic index carbohydrates.Chronic consumption of low-glycemic index foods (i.e.lentils, beans) leads to better blood glucose control and lower release of insulin; therefore, these foods are recommended for prevention of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.
