The enzyme steroid sulfatase (STS) is responsible for the formation of biologically active estrogens by the hydrolysis of estrogen sulfates and regulates estrogen homeostasis.In this report, we showed that hepatic over-expression of STS in female STS transgenic mice elicited metabolic benefits that protected mice from high fat diet (HFD) induced obesity and type 2 diabetes.STS transgenic mice subjected to HFD challenge displayed significant decrease in fat mass and body weight, and increased energy expenditure without alterations in food intake compared with their wild-type counterparts.
