Whether the difference between L2 learners and native speakers is qualitative or quantitative has been a focus in L2 sentence processing. The shallow structure hypothesis proposed that L2 learners are assumedto be "shallower" or less structurally-driven than native speakers, they lack or cannot deploy the structure necessary to process wh-extractions.While the computational accounts attribute L2 learners difficulty in processing wh-extractions to reduced processing efficiency due to L2 learners limited decoding abilities and working memory (WM) capacity.Recently, some studies demonstrated that the WM capacity of L2 learners was lower than that of native speakers. So the present study reviewed the two hypotheses, and Whether the difference between L2 learners and native speakers is qualitative or quantitative has been a focus in L2 sentence processing.
