  The recent trends for shrimp aquaculture include intensification and bio-security.Stacked tank systems are capable of producing one million kilograms of 15 to 30 gram shrimp per hectare footprint of water per year in a bio-secure indoor environment.Most of the worldwide shrimp production comes from outdoor pond systems.The focus of this presentation is bio-secure,reduced water exchange, shallow water nursery systems, which complement pond systems.The benefits of nursery systems include, head starting of animals before the production cycle resulting in production of larger shrimp, better management conditions during the juvenile shrimp production phase, and improving sustainability of the production systems by stocking larger, hardier juveniles.The benefits of shallow water are a decrease of water usage, greater production in less space, and better management because of more proximity to the animals.The advantages of biofloc include control over water quality without the need for sophisticated equipment, improved biosecurity, and supplemental nutrition by utilization of microbial protein.The management methodology of shallow water biofloc nursery systems is described.
