  Converting electrical energy from highly volatile renewable sources,such as wind power and photovoltaics into stable and easy storable chemical energy carriers or bulk chemicals,often embraced as "Power-to-X",currently attracts a lot of attention in Europe.Ahead of all the German Federal Government has set ambitious goals for reorientation of the energy system to become largely based on renewables1.They require a continued build-up of wind power and photovoltaics.However,besides economic challenges,this will aggravate the punctual already existing problem of temporal and local mismatch of electricity generation and consumption.Expansion of the power grid,the integration of storage technologies,and the coupling of the power grid with other energy networks such as district heating or the gas grid,as well as demand side management are the main measures currently under investigation which should guarantee grid stability and far-reaching CO2 reduction.
