US& UK medicines agencies adviseagainst systemic post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT), estrogen (E) or estrogen+progestagen (EP) for health promotion.The Cochrane review (Marjoribanks 2012) shows that EP HRT increases risk of coronary event (annual risk (AR) 4/1000, 95% CI 3 to 7), stroke (AR 18/1000, 95% CI 14 to 23), and breast cancer (AR 23/1000, 95% CI 19 to 29).For E HRT the risks are thrombo-embolism (AR 5/1000, 95% CI 2 to 10), stroke (AR 32/1000, 95% CI 25 to 40) but no significant increase in the risk of breast cancer.
