  Glucose is the main energy source for the mammalian brain.It is transported from the blood to the brain across the endothelial cells of the blood-brain barrier and into the neurons and glia.This transport is mediated by glucose transporter proteins.Although all of the transporters probably contribute to cerebral glucose utilization,GLUT1 and GLUT3 are main glucose transporters in the brain.A decrease in GLUTI in brain was reported in experimental diabetes.Chromium is an essential trace element whose organic forms have been used to reduce elevated blood glucose levels in people with diabetes.We tested whether supplemental chromium under diabetic conditions may alter expression of GLUT 1 and GLUT3 in brain tissue of rats.Expression of GLUT1 and GLUT3 and chromium concentration were significantly decreased in brain tissue of diabetic rats.Chromium administration to diabetic rats increased brain chromium levels and GLUT 1 and GLUT3 expression.Brain Cr levels was positively correlated with brain GLUT1 and GLUT3 expression.
