The increasing resistance of the malaria parasites enforces alternative directions in finding new drug targets.Present findings from the malaria parasite P.vivax, causing tertiary malaria suggest eukaryotic initiation factor 5A (elF-5A) to be a promising target in drug development for the treament of malaria.Previously we presented the 162 amino acid sequence of eukaryotic initiation factor 5A (elF-5A) from Plasmodium vivax.In the present study we have expressed the 20 kD protein in E.coli.Purification was performed by one step Nickel chelate chromatography.In Western Blot experiments elF-5A from P.vivax crossreacts with its homologue from the plant Nicotiana plumbaginifolia (Solanaceae).
