In order to maintain optimal perfusion and oxygenation, most cardiac surgical procedures, are performed under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) assistance. In order to optimize extracorporeal circulation,we tried to define the basic principles of a minimally detrimental CPB system, which should be able to cover the needs of the organism in terms of perfusion (efficiency) and eliminate or minimize the adverse effects linked to CPB systems (safety).
