Over the last two decades the various polysaccharide type chiral stationary phases (CSPs) became the dominant tools for analytical and preparative enantiomer separations in LC and SFC modes. The spectrum of analytes to be resolved is very wide, however, there remain niches to develop also alternative chiral selector and CSP systems and to study molecular recognition phenomena. In this context we focused a research program towards the elucidation of chiral ion exchangers to cope specifically with ionisable and highly polar chiral analytes which require polar mobile phases. In particular we developed a set of novel (i) anion exchangers derived from cinchona alkaloids, (ii) cation exchangers derived from amino sulfonic acids, and (iii) zwitterionic ion exchangers via the fusion of cationic and anionic molecule residues to ampholyte type commodities.
