Given the links between: high maternal weight gain during pregnancy and large for gestational age (LGA) babies; and ovemutrition in utero (i.e., large size at birth) and obesity later in life, the prenatal period provides an early and unique opportunity to promote healthy weights.High gestational weight gain is recognized as a modifiable risk factor for foetal overnutrition and macrosomia.Although interventions have been developed to help pregnant women achieve healthy weight gains, the prevalence rates of high gestational weight gain and LGA births are steadily increasing in many countries.
