The 10 Years of Suicide Prevention in Thailand

  Background: The suicide rate has been a major public health concern in Thailand.After the Asian economic crisis, which of initially had started in Thailand in 1997.The crisis resulted in substantial losses in social welfare.More than a million Thais fell below the poverty line as a result of it.Suicide rates in 1999 were at their highest peak as 8.6 per 100,000 populations in Thai history.The Department of Mental Health has been solved the problem for ten years.Objective: To study and review the knowledge of suicide prevention and the thing learned from implementing a national program for solving the problem of suicide in Thailand during 2000-2010.To develop a guideline for solving the suicide problem in Thailand.Methods: This is a quantitative research.1) Review the knowledge of suicide prevention worldwide and also in Thailand.Review the lessons learned from suicide prevention program in Thailand during 2000-2010.2) Develop success activities for the National Suicide Prevention Strategies (NSPS) to solve the problem further.3) Present data by using geographical information system according to WHO mention.4) Summarize knowledge and give recommendation solving the very problematic areas such as the northern part of Thailand.Results: Gaining knowledge on suicide prevention as through the program the suicide rate in Thailand climbed down from 8.4/100,000 (Year 2000) to 5.71/100,000 (Year 2010).Interventions enhanced mental health services and programs.We found that in addition to depression and drug abuse, local values and cultures are very important factors contributing to suicide behaviour.We found the protective and risk factors to be modified to solve the problem further.Suggestion: The project has achieved most of its goals.The current suicide rates are not too high.The knowledge of running this program should be studied carefully and should be used to prevent the relapse of the problem in the near future, especially in the current situation of many crises the country is facing.Prevention is necessary and appropriate for suicide problem.
