The broad spectrums of bioactive peptides exist in natural resources which are involved in different biological processes with regulatory activities.The identification of bioactive peptides with anti-cancer activity could be a new strategy to develop the novel anti-cancer therapeutic agent with low toxicity.The bioactive peptides refer to the peptides with vital physiological effects, from either endogenous (from host self) or exogenous sources (from other hosts or natural products).Due to their effective absorption or delivery mechanisms, bioactive peptides exhibit more significant physiological functions then free amino acids.With the fast development of advanced enzyme and protein engineering technologies, more biological active peptides have been discovered or synthesized, which are widely investigated for their anti-cancer activities.In addition, due to their nature of biological products, minimal toxicity would be expected for bioactive peptides when compared with classical chemotherapies small molecule or targeted therapy using small molecules.Alternatively, bioactive peptides could be used as new adjuvant agents to enhance chemotherapeutic efficacy and reduce toxicity in the treatment of cancer patients.
