Ginseng has been widely used for thousands of years.Ginsenosides are believed to be one of the major active ingredients of ginseng.Benefits of ginsenosides to CNS functions such as cognition and mood regulation have been well documented.However,most of ginsenosides are poorly absorbable when orally given,which is the main route of administration traditionally.Ginsenosides are metabolized in the gastrointestinal track,especially by bacteria of the gut flora.Metabolic products of ginsenosides are deglycosilated and become hydrophobic.Those compounds are better permeable for gut-blood barrier.Therefore,we hypothesized that pharmacological activity of many ginsenosides may be mediated by their metabolites.In the present study,we tested anti-depression activity of a compound,code named S 111,which is the common deglycosilation metabolite ofprotopanaxadiol ginsenosides.
