Two supercharged and variable compression ratios are two recent innovations by Italy’s Grandi Motori Trieste (GMT) on its B230 series of diesel engines. The B239 diesel engine has been on the market for some time and its key features have been reported in Diesel & Gas Turbine Progress Worldwide, Issue 3, 1978. The new B230 DV diesel engine retains the main structural features of the original model (230 mm bore, 270 mm stroke, inline or V-shape depending on the number of cylinders); however, this larger diesel engine (20-cylinder V-shape) Output power increased from 4,000 to 5,600 kW at 1,200 rpm (Figure 1).
