UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos urged the international community to help the people of Darfur region become self-sufficient, saying that she was disappointed that the region is still not self-reliant after 10 years of humanitarian operations, during her 4 days' visit to Darfur.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), over 1.4 million people are receiving humanitarian assistance in nearly 100 displacement camps across Darfur.
Ms. Amos said that a stronger bridge between humanitarian and development work is needed. During the visit, Ms. Amos met with internally displaced people at the Zam Zam camp, and held talks with authorities and the head of the joint African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur in El Fasher.
