雪莱总是不停地看书。吃饭时他桌上也摊着一本书。他常会忘了喝茶吃烤面包,可是却不会忘记读书;他会让面前的羊腿、马铃薯冷掉,可对书本的热情却丝毫不减。他外出散步时也是手不释卷,要是独自出门,他便自言自语地吟诵;要是有人同行,他就大声朗读。他带着书上床,直读到蜡烛燃完了才睡——就连觉他也睡不安稳——一等天蒙蒙亮,他又捧起书来……他老是半醒半睡地等天亮,拼命地看书,结果在白天他常常会打瞌睡——就象个婴儿似的倒头便睡。他常常悄无声息地从椅子里滑下倒在地毯上沉沉睡着了。冬天,他象只猫咪似地蜷在火炉边,那小小的圆头也象猫儿似地在熊熊的炉火前烤着。要是有谁好心在他头上遮块东西挡挡热气,他在睡梦中会不耐烦地把它扯到一边去……
